What is Bilateral Renal Agenesis? What is Potter's Syndrome?
Bilateral Renal Agenesis (BRA) literally means both kidneys failed to form. Bilateral (both sides), Renal (kidneys), Agenesis (never began). Potter's Syndrome, a term that is no longer used in medical terminology, is simply the blanket term used to describe serveral kidney abnormalities including: BRA, polycysitc kidney disease, and renal hypoplasia.
Potter’s Syndrome: Bilateral Renal Agenesis (BRA) in layman terms can be explained when: At some point in a babies early development if he/her does not develop kidneys or a bladder. Why is this so important? Well after the first trimester the baby starts urinating creating amniotic fluid (yep! its baby pee). The baby inhales this amniotic fluid to develop his/her lungs. So without kidneys or a bladder a baby is unable to urinate thus not making amniotic fluid, thus not allowing the lungs to develop. In short, a Potter’s baby with BRA is not equiped with the necessary life tools (developed lungs) to live outside of the mother’s womb. Potter’s babies with BRA generally die due to respitory failure shortly after birth.
